AREDS is shorthand for a particular combination of vitamins and minerals named after the Age Related Eye Disease Study. When a supplement describes itself as an AREDS formula, it is telling you which ingredient pattern it follows, not making a promise about your eyes. Whether that pattern has any place in your own routine is a question for your eye doctor, who knows your history and what else you take.
Two things usually decide it. The first is whether you already take a daily multivitamin. If you do, a combination product means one bottle instead of two and no accidental doubling up of the same nutrients.
