Watery eyes

Why eyes water, and what helps.

Wind, cold air, screens and allergens can all make eyes water, and a few simple habits help many people.

Sort the pattern.

A little detective work makes a visit more useful.

Both eyes

Often wind, cold, screens or allergy season.

One eye

Steady watering on one side is worth an eye exam.

Along with discomfort

Pain, light sensitivity or discharge should be checked promptly.

Why dry-feeling eyes water.

When the eye surface feels irritated, eyes can respond with a rush of thin, watery tears. Those tears come and go quickly, which is why lubricating drops still help some people feel more comfortable.

Weather

Screens

Long focus sessions mean fewer full blinks.

Allergens

Pollen, dust and pets can bring watering along with itch.

Fast answers.

Why do eyes water when they feel dry?

Irritation can trigger a burst of thin, watery tears. They come and go quickly, so eyes can feel dry and watery at the same time.

Is watering in one eye different?

Steady watering on one side, especially when the eye otherwise feels fine, is worth an eye exam.

Can lubricating drops help watery eyes?

If both eyes water along with a dry or gritty feeling, lubricating drops may help comfort. Ask your eye doctor what fits.

When is it time to be seen sooner?

Book promptly for pain, light sensitivity, discharge, an injury, or swelling near the inner corner of the eye.
