Sodium chloride 2% is the active ingredient and its stated purpose is hypertonicity agent. It is a hypertonic saline drop rather than a lubricating artificial tear, and the formula is preserved with methylparaben and propylparaben. This is an over-the-counter drug that is to be used only under the advice and supervision of a doctor. The dosing schedule on the label is 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye or eyes every 3 or 4 hours, or as directed by a doctor, which places it in a daytime routine repeated through the day. The same Muro 128 line is also supplied as a 5% ophthalmic solution and as a 5% ophthalmic ointment, each with its own label.
